The Approval Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They comprise entirely practicing, board certified physicians with active certificates in their respective specialties.
Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment
Dr. Dean is currently a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine and the founding Director of the UW Medicine Heart Institute in Seattle. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology.
Previously, Dr. Dean was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine where he also served as an assistant medical director of UAB Hospital. While there he practiced general and interventional cardiology and was involved in the early development of coronary stents.
Dr. Dean specializes in interventional cardiology and is widely published in that field. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, and is a Master Interventionalist of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). He is also a past president of SCAI.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and his medical degree from the UAB. Following medical school, Dr. Dean served his internship and residency at the UW School of Medicine and received cardiology training, including interventional cardiology, at the UAB School of Medicine. He also holds a certificate in medical management from the UW.

Dr. Baber is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and clinical cardiologist at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology. He is also a diplomate of the National Board of Echocardiography and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
As an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist, Dr. Baber provides care to patients with a wide range of advanced cardiovascular diseases and disorders. His clinical interests include cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac imaging.
Dr. Baber attended medical school at Allama Iqbal Medical College in Pakistan. He completed internal medicine residency at Abington Memorial Hospital, cardiovascular disease fellowship at Lehigh Valley Health Network and advanced heart failure and transplant fellowship at the University of Virginia Health System.

Dr. Calvin is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Science, a clinical cardiologist and Chair of Education at the Mayo Clinic Health System, and Medical Director, Accreditation and Compliance, for the Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease; he is also a diplomate in Adult Comprehensive Echocardiography and a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Calvin practices general inpatient and outpatient cardiology and echocardiography. He serves on the Academic Appointment and Promotion Committee of the Mayo Clinic, and as the Medical Director of Accreditation and Compliance for the Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Wisconsin Chapter of ACP, the Wisconsin Medical Society and the Chippewa Valley Council of Scouting America.
Dr. Calvin earned his graduate and medical degrees from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Medical School, followed by graduate training through the Clinician-Investigator Training Program at the Mayo Clinic in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, preventive cardiology and echocardiography.

Dr. Gerhard-Herman is a cardiovascular medicine specialist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Gerhard-Herman’s clinical interests include deep vein thrombosis, general vascular medicine and Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria syndrome. She has authored over 75 peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as numerous educational materials, clinical guidelines and reports. Her research has received support from the National Institutes of Health and Progeria Research Foundation.
She received her medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Medical University. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital/Thorndike Memorial Laboratory (now Boston Medical Center), as well as fellowship programs in cardiovascular disease and vascular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is ABIM Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease.

Dr. Hutchinson is the managing partner of Chesapeake Cardiac Care in Annapolis, Maryland. She is ABIM Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Sleep Medicine. Patients from all over the world seek her out, and she is a noted speaker on heart disease in women and how sleep affects heart health. Dr. Hutchinson is also an instructor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Previously, Dr. Hutchinson was Medical Director of the Heart and Vascular Unit at Anne Arundel Medical Center and an intensivist at Mercy Medical Center. She was the first African American to hold the title of Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital. She was also a lecturer in pharmacology at the University of the District of Columbia in the Department of Respiratory Therapy.
Dr. Hutchinson is currently President-Elect of the Association of Black Cardiologists, and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Additionally, Dr. Hutchinson is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Caribbean American Heritage Award, the Innovator of the Year, the Enterprising Woman of the Year Award, the Impact Award and the Brava Award.
Dr. Hutchinson was born in Trinidad and Tobago. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of the West Indies. Upon graduation, she moved to the United States, became an American citizen and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Cardiovascular Pharmacology from Howard University followed by a medical degree and subsequent fellowship in cardiology from the University of Maryland.

Dr. Russo, ABIM Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, is Professor of Medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, Academic Chief of the Division of Cardiology, Director of Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Services, and Director of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. Dr. Russo previously served on the ABIM Cardiovascular Test-Writing Committee and the American Board of Medical Specialties Continuing Board Certification Vision for the Future Commission. She is the Chair of the ABIM Cardiovascular Board.
She is past president of the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), current member of the American Heart Association (AHA) Atrial Fibrillation Systems of Care Advisory Committee and member of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Cardio-Obstetrics Council. She previously served on or chaired multiple ACC, AHA and HRS committees, subcommittees and working groups. In addition, she has served as co-chair or member on several guideline and consensus documents, as well as Appropriate Use criteria writing groups. She also serves on editorial boards for several peer-reviewed journals and is a current Associate Editor for Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology. She has served on steering committees, events committees and data safety monitoring committees for several clinical trials. Her areas of research interest include implantable cardioverter defibrillators, atrial fibrillation therapies, sex differences in arrhythmias and the role of digital health in arrhythmia management.
Dr. Russo earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology at the University of Rochester and a medical degree at the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. She completed an internal medicine residency at Drexel University College of Medicine (then the Medical College of Pennsylvania) in Philadelphia and fellowships in cardiovascular disease and electrophysiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Traditional, 10-Year MOC Exam
Dr. Cassimatis provides inpatient and outpatient noninvasive cardiology care at Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM) in Atlanta. He is currently the Martha West Looney Chief of Medicine at EUHM, a role he assumed in 2020 after serving for more than a decade as the cardiology medical director of the Coronary Care Unit. In addition to his clinical and administrative work, Dr. Cassimatis co-directs the first-year medical student Cardiovascular Pathophysiology course at the Emory University School of Medicine and is one of the school’s Small Group Advisors.
Before joining Emory in 2010, Dr. Cassimatis spent 11 years as a physician in the United States Army. He received his medical degree from Harvard University and his post-graduate training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease.

Dr. Douglass is Chief, Division of Cardiology and Director, Cardiovascular Services at the Atlanta Medical Center and practices clinical and interventional cardiology at Metropolitan Atlanta Cardiology Consultants. He is also a past Chairman of the Hospital Board at Atlanta Medical Center. He serves as Clinical Assistant Professor (Cardiology) at Morehouse School of Medicine.
He has been the recipient of numerous professional awards including the Physician of the Year Award and the Nash – Carter Award from the Atlanta Medical Association; the Distinguished Service Medallion from the Georgia State Medical Association; several years of Teaching Excellence Awards from the Department of Internal Medicine at Atlanta Medical Center; and the Hero Award from the Association of Black Cardiologists. Dr. Douglass has worked diligently on behalf of cardiovascular medicine, serving on the National Heart Lung Blood Institute Advisory Panel and the Special Emphasis Panel and Disparities Working Group. He was instrumental in the planning and establishment of the Georgia chapter of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and served as its first Secretary – Treasurer. He also became President and Governor of the Georgia chapter of the ACC.
Dr. Douglass has participated on numerous committees and task forces for ACC and completed his term as Chair of the Credentials and Membership Committee in 2006. He was also appointed to the Board of Trustees of the ACC. Dr. Douglass is the chair of the Publications Committee for The Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He is past President of the Metro Atlanta American Heart Association; he has served as president of the Atlanta Medical Association, president of the Georgia State Medical Association, and national president of the Association of Black Cardiologists. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Wellstar Health System.
Dr. Douglass received his undergraduate degree in biology from Northwestern University. His medical degree was awarded at Meharry Medical College. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in 1976. Dr. Douglass did his postgraduate training in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Duvall is the Director of Nuclear Cardiology at Hartford Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He is ABIM Board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, and holds additional certification in nuclear cardiology and adult echocardiography.
Previously, Dr. Duvall worked as a noninvasive cardiologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center for almost 10 years, most recently serving as an Associate Professor of Medicine. During his time there, he worked full-time in the echocardiography and nuclear cardiology laboratories and served in several administrative positions including in the fellowship program and the cardiac care unit.
Dr. Duvall is actively involved with the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, currently serving on the Board of Directors. Additionally, he is a member of the Registry Oversight Committee and the Deputy Chair of the Health Policy Committee.
Dr. Duvall received a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Princeton University and his medical degree from Yale University. He completed his internal medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center, and his cardiovascular disease fellowship at Mount Sinai Health System.

Dr. Kinlay is the Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Vascular Medicine at the VA Boston Healthcare System, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kinlay is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology, with expertise in invasive and noninvasive vascular medicine. He is also certified by the American Board of Vascular Medicine in General Vascular Medicine and Endovascular Medicine. He is a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation.
Dr. Kinlay’s clinical interests include interventional cardiology and intravascular imaging, and the noninvasive and endovascular treatment of peripheral vascular disease. His research interests are in clinical outcomes after coronary and peripheral interventions, particularly in veterans treated in the VA Healthcare System, lipid lowering therapies, and endothelial and vascular function.
Dr. Kinlay completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney School of Medicine in Australia and a residency at the Royal Newcastle Hospital. He completed fellowships in internal medicine and cardiology at John Hunter Hospital and an interventional cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. McGarry is a cardiac electrophysiologist at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salt Lake City and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah Medical Center. He was previously Assistant Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where his laboratory studied the biochemistry of cell division. He has served as a member of the ABIM Cardiovascular Disease Item-Writing Task Force, the Accreditation and Approval Committee of the Heart Rhythm Society and the Institutional Review Board at the University of Utah. He was chair of the Admissions Committee for the Medical Scientist Training Program at Northwestern and the Director for Course Development for the course in cell biology at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. McGarry received undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He received his medical degree and a doctorate in molecular genetics from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. His post-graduate training was at the Massachusetts General Hospital, the University of California, San Francisco and the University of California, San Diego. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Dr. Raina is the Director of the Advanced Heart Failure Cardiology and Pulmonary Hypertension Programs at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Drexel University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is also on the echocardiography staff at Allegheny General Hospital. Dr. Raina previously served on the ABIM Cardiovascular Disease Item-Writing Task Force.
He is a nationally renowned physician with expertise in the diagnostic evaluation and management of pulmonary hypertension. His particular interest is in advanced imaging of the right ventricle in pulmonary arterial hypertension. He has published extensively in this field, with more than 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters. Dr. Raina was named one of Pittsburgh Magazine's “Best Doctors” in 2019.
Dr. Raina received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University. He received a medical degree and completed residency at Columbia University. He attended the University of Pennsylvania for his fellowship in cardiovascular disease where he specialized in advanced heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology.

Dr. Singh is the Director for the General Cardiovascular Fellowship Program at Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health in West Reading, Pennsylvania. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, and holds additional certifications in echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography, nuclear cardiology and vascular ultrasonography. He has also earned a Master in Lipidology through the National Lipid Association.
Dr. Singh serves on various state and national committees with the American College of Cardiology and the National Lipid Association, and volunteers as a Content Expert for the Alliance for Physician Certification & Advancement. Previously, Dr. Singh was Assistant Professor of Medicine and Research Chairman for the graduate medical education programs at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He was the Internal Medicine Clerkship Director for third- and fourth-year medical students and later transitioned to the role of Associate Program Director of the Cardiovascular Fellowship.
Dr. Singh has a special interest in exam-designing and enhancing healthcare quality. Since 2019, he has worked closely with ABIM in various capacities, including standard-setting, service on the Cardiovascular Disease Item-Writing Task Force and a Fairness Review team.
Dr. Singh received his medical degree from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in India. He completed an internal medicine residency at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, including one year as chief resident. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Sivaram is a David Ross Professor at the University of Oklahoma and serves as the Vice Chief of the Cardiovascular Section for Education and Training (Department of Medicine) and Associate Dean for Continuing Professional Development at the University of Oklahoma (OU) College of Medicine.
He served on the faculty of Texas Tech University at Amarillo for nine years, moving to the University of Oklahoma in 1993. He is involved with student, resident and fellow education at OU, and has mentored many trainees and received multiple teaching awards.
Dr. Sivaram is very active with the American College of Cardiology (ACC) both at the state and national levels, having served as a past chair of the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program Directors group. He was the national chair for ABIM’s Competency-Based Pilot in Internal Medicine/Cardiology. He was recognized with the Gifted Educator Award from ACC (2015) and the Laennec Master Clinician Award from the American Heart Association (2017). He maintains an active clinical practice at OU Physicians and is sought after locally for his expertise in the field of echocardiography.
Dr. Sivaram obtained his medical degree and cardiology training from India and underwent additional residency and cardiology fellowship training at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University of Alberta.
