The Approval Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They comprise entirely practicing, board certified physicians with active certificates in their respective specialties.
Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment
Dr. Samson is Chair of the Division of Endocrinology in the Department of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic Florida. She is cross-appointed to the Department of Neurologic Surgery, specializing in pituitary disorders. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Canada in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and ABIM Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
She has served the American Program Directors of Endocrinology and Metabolism (Council Member and Secretary/Treasurer), the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (Taskforce Member, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship Milestones 2.0) and ABIM (Self-Assessment Committee, Item-Writing Task Force and the LKA Approval Committee). Dr. Samson is on the Executive Committee of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology.
She was the Medical Director of the Baylor St. Luke's Pituitary Center and the Endocrinology Fellowship Director, having trained more than 60 endocrinology fellows during her time as Associate Program Director and Program Director. She was awarded the Fulbright and Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching and Evaluation, the Rising Star Award and the Woman of Excellence Award during her time at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Samson earned her medical degree at Queen’s University in Ontario and completed her residency at the University of Calgary in Alberta. She received her fellowship training in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas.

Dr. Fish is an associate member in the Endocrine Division at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell School of Medicine. As a clinician, Dr. Fish focuses on the care of patients with thyroid disease, specifically thyroid cancer. She is also the Associate Program Director of the Combined Endocrine Fellowship Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell School of Medicine. She is ABIM Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
After completing her training, Dr. Fish joined the faculty in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania. She was an instructor of medicine from 2002 to 2004 and an Assistant Professor of Medicine from 2004 to 2010.
Dr. Fish is an active member of the Endocrine Society and the American Thyroid Association (ATA). She has been the Co-Director of the Fellow’s Program during the annual ATA meeting since 2005 and Clinical Chair of the Program Committee for the annual ATA meeting. Dr. Fish has also taught innumerable thyroid ultrasound courses to endocrinologists and fellows across the country.
Dr. Fish completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania and she received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. She returned to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine for residency training in internal medicine and fellowship training in endocrinology.

Dr. Graybill is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Uniformed Services University, Endocrinology Chief at Brooke Military Medical Center, Army Endocrine Consultant for the Office to the Surgeon General, Champion for the VA/DOD guidelines on obesity management and Co-Chair for the Endocrine Society's Fellow Training Series. Her research interests include thyroid dysfunction, endocrine neoplasia, hypogonadism, diabetes and metabolic bone disease.
Dr. Graybill received her undergraduate degree from the Pennsylvania State University and her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and her fellowship in endocrinology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Dr. Gruntmanis is currently a Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He is ABIM Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
Dr. Gruntmanis practices at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center where he is Director of Bone Health and Osteoporosis Program. He is passionate about graduate and postgraduate teaching and is one of the On-Doctoring longitudinal small group mentors for first year medical students. He was the Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center until 2018 and Section Chief of Endocrinology at Dallas VA Medical Center until 2014. His area of research interest is osteoporosis, more specifically male osteoporosis and value care in patients’ post-minimal trauma fractures.
Dr. Gruntmanis is a member of several professional organizations including the Endocrine Society and the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and President of the Latvian Medical and Dental Association. He previously served on the ABIM Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Item-Writing Task Force.
He received his medical degree from Riga Stradiņš University in Latvia. Dr. Gruntmanis completed internal medicine residency at Yale University and the University of Rochester, New York. He completed endocrinology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center/University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Kermani is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She maintains an active endocrinology practice and teaches fellows and residents at Parkland Health in Dallas. Dr. Kermani also serves as Medical Director for Diabetes at Southwestern Health Resources, a large accountable care organization. She is ABIM Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
At Southwestern Health Resources, Dr. Kermani has been active in creating a predictive model for diabetes progression using artificial intelligence. She is involved in working with primary care physicians and endocrinologists to help with practicing standards of care in patients with diabetes as well as integrating care management, dietician and pharmacy services into primary care practices.
Dr. Kermani is currently a member of the Community Engagement Committee, Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), a prospective cohort study to help create a tissue atlas from renal biopsies and other specimens on patients with chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury to better understand mechanisms of disease and develop precision treatment strategies. As a member of the Community Engagement Committee, she edited the Clinician Primer to help educate primary care physicians about KPMP and edited the Adverse Effects Communication Plan and Reporting of Results Plan. She works closely to represent the patient population that is participating in KPMP and help clinicians better understand the rationale for the study.
Dr. Kermani has served as a subject matter expert in endocrinology for the American College of Physicians (ACP). She was involved in the ACP Care Coordination Workgroup, created and sponsored by the ACP Council of Subspecialty Societies, in January 2019.
Dr. Kermani received her medical degree from the Medical College of Aga Khan University. She completed her internal medicine residency and fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Dr. McMahon is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), which leverages the power of education to drive quality in the medical profession and in health care. Dr. McMahon leads initiatives to accelerate learning, change and growth, enabling clinicians and teams in practice to improve care for patients, families and communities. In addition to his role at ACCME, Dr. McMahon serves as Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, teaches medical students and fellows, and continues to care for patients with endocrine disorders at Howard Brown Health.
A medical educator, researcher and endocrinologist, Dr. McMahon joined ACCME in April 2015 from Harvard Medical School, where he served as Associate Dean for Continuing Education and Associate Professor of Medicine. He taught extensively at Harvard Medical School and at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, served as Editor for Medical Education at The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and as Executive Editor for the NEJM Knowledge+ program. He served as an endocrinologist in practice and as the Fellowship Program Director in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is a recipient of several major grants and national awards for excellence in diabetes care innovation, systems change and medical education.
A native of Dublin, Dr. McMahon earned his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He also received a doctoral degree in medical education from the National University of Ireland. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine as well as Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He earned a Master of Medical Science in Clinical Research from Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Basaria is a reproductive endocrinologist and the Associate Director of the Section of Men’s Health, Aging and Metabolism at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is ABIM Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He also serves as chair of the ABIM Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Traditional, 10-Year Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Exam Approval Committee.
Dr. Basaria is a clinical investigator in the field of male reproductive endocrinology. His research interests include assessing the efficacy of testosterone therapy in cancer-related fatigue, pain perception and aging, and assessing the cardiometabolic consequences of androgen deprivation therapy in men with prostate cancer.
Dr. Basaria also provides clinical care to patients with a variety of male reproductive disorders, including patients with cancer and those with opioid-induced hypogonadism. Additionally, he is a mentor to junior faculty and endocrine fellows pursuing their careers in reproductive endocrinology.
Dr. Basaria is the Associate Editor of The Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences and has previously served on the editorial board of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Previously, Dr. Basaria led the section on Male Reproduction on the Self-Assessment Committee of the Endocrine Society and was also involved in developing the Endocrine Society's Male Androgen Deficiency Performance Improvement Module, which practicing endocrinologists use towards their Maintenance of Certification requirement. Dr. Basaria serves as a member of the National Institute of Child Health and Development’s Special Emphasis Panel on Male Contraception, and on the National Institute on Aging’s Panel on Aging and Mobility.
Dr. Basaria received his medical degree from the Medical College of the Aga Khan University. He completed house staff training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and his endocrine fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Desouza is a Professor of Medicine and the Chief of Endocrinology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is ABIM Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Dr. Desouza also practices at the Omaha VA Medical Center where he is the Director of the Diabetes and Obesity Program.
He was the Associate Program Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship and then the Program Director at the University of Nebraska until 2011. His area of research interest is diabetes and its complications, and more specifically cardiovascular complications and the effect of a newer generation of diabetes medications on cardiovascular disease outcomes. He does both basic research and clinical trials.
Dr. Desouza is a member of several professional organizations such as the Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association, and he has served on several national committees. He is also a reviewer for the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health study sections and has published over 80 articles in multiple journals.
He received his medical degree from St. John's Medical College in India. Dr. Desouza completed internal medicine residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York City and endocrinology fellowship at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans.

Dr. Drake has received numerous awards, including the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Young Investigator Award and the Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine New Investigator Award. He currently serves as Chair of the Mayo Clinic Metabolic Bone Disease Core Group. He also serves on the editorial boards of The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research; Bone; The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism; and Mayo Clinic Proceedings, and on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Soft Bones Foundation.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Drake is involved in providing care to patients with a variety of metabolic bone diseases. In addition, he performs translational research with areas of interest including understanding the mechanisms underlying age-associated bone loss and diabetes-associated skeletal fragility, as well as the basis by which monoclonal gammopathies induce bone loss and fractures.
Dr. Drake received his undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard College and completed his medical and doctoral degrees at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His clinical training in internal medicine was completed at Duke University Medical Center and he completed his endocrinology fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic, where he subsequently joined the staff in 2007.

Dr. Subramanian is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington (UW) Department of Medicine, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition. She is ABIM Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
Dr. Subramanian is the Medical Director of the UW Lipid Clinic with special expertise in managing individuals with genetic lipid disorders, partial lipodystrophy and complex diabetes. Her research has focused on studying the molecular mechanisms driving inflammation in obese adipose tissue, liver and atherosclerosis. Her other clinical interest includes diabetes management in primary care, having done extensive work as part of a collaborative care model for diabetes working with primary care physicians in the greater Seattle area. She is the physician lead for diabetes population health management for UW Medicine and has developed standardization pathways for outpatient diabetes management for primary care.
Locally, Dr. Subramanian is also involved in many teaching activities for trainees and clinicians. She is the co-chair of the popular Diabetes and Endocrine Update for Primary Care CME courses for the University of Washington. She is a recent past member of the Endocrine Self-Assessment Program workgroup and is currently part of the Lipid Management Guidelines task force of the Endocrine Society.
She obtained her medical degree from Stanley Medical College in India and completed an internal medical residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She completed an endocrinology fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a research fellowship at the University of Washington.
