The Approval Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They comprise entirely practicing, board certified physicians with active certificates in their respective specialties.

Dr. Bhatt is a pulmonary/critical care and sleep medicine physician at the Ohio State University (OSU) with a clinical and academic interest in interstitial lung diseases. He has been Medical Director of the OSU Interstitial Lung Diseases Center and led its participation in the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) Care Center Network and Patient Registry. He has also been involved with the American Thoracic Society Environmental Health Policy Committee and the American College of Chest Physicians, most recently as Chair of the Occupational and Environmental Health Section of Diffuse Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Network.

His background includes basic science research in monocyte and macrophage biology as related to interstitial lung diseases, and he has been involved in therapeutic clinical trials, including studies in interstitial lung disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and associated conditions including autoimmune disease and pulmonary hypertension. He also has a clinical interest in pulmonary physiology and pulmonary function testing and has been Medical Director of Ohio State's Pulmonary Diagnostics and Bronchoscopy Labs.

He is ABIM Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine and actively maintains practice in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

Dr. Bhatt earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Ohio State University, where he also completed his internal medicine training and pulmonary/critical care fellowship training.

Headshot of Dr. Jacqueline Chang

Dr. Chang is a pulmonary and critical care physician at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California. She is ABIM Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease and has served as Division Head of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Scripps Clinic since 2006. She also serves as Medical Director of the pulmonary function laboratories and the thoracic oncology service.

Through the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center affiliation, Dr. Chang holds an affiliate appointment with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She has held several leadership roles within Scripps Clinic Medical Group, including membership on the Medical Executive Committee and various leadership selection committees.

Her current responsibilities focus primarily on clinical care, with particular expertise in fibrosing parenchymal lung disease. She remains actively engaged in administrative leadership, resident teaching and clinical research.

Dr. Chang received her undergraduate degree in biology and economics with honors in both through Stanford University. She also received her medical degree and completed her internal medicine residency training at Stanford. She went on to complete her fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Washington, where she also earned a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the University of Washington School of Public Health.

Headshot of Dr. Karen A. Fagan

Dr. Fagan is Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of South Alabama (USA) in Mobile, where she is also Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology. She is a member of the Center for Lung Biology and Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at USA Health. Prior to this role, Dr. Fagan was a faculty member in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado, eventually rising to Associate Professor. At Colorado, she developed a clinical and scientific interest in pulmonary hypertension and received a National Institutes of Health K08 award followed by R01s and other extramural and intramural funding. In addition, she has served on numerous committees and leadership positions in the Pulmonary Hypertension Association and the American Thoracic Society. She is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Fagan graduated with her bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of California, San Diego and completed internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After residency, she completed fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado in Denver.

Dr. Krishnan is Professor of Medicine, Professor of Public Health and Associate Vice Chancellor for Population Health Sciences at the University of Illinois (UI) Chicago. He is responsible for developing, testing and implementing healthcare interventions to improve care, outcomes and affordability of care for populations served by the UI Health System.

Dr. Krishnan is a leader in the field of healthcare delivery science, including the development of clinical guidelines, clinical effectiveness (“real world”) research, implementation science and integration of human-centered design in health care. He is a member of research consortia funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute and the American Lung Association for studies in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COVID-19. He is ABIM Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease.

He participates in several national and international advisory groups or committees. Examples include the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) NIH CONNECTS Steering Committee, the European Respiratory Society/American Thoracic Society COPD Exacerbations Guidelines (past chair), the Food and Drug Administration Pulmonary and Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee (past chair), the NIH/NHLBI Clinical Trials Review Committee (past chair), the NIH/National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences Special Emphasis Panel for Clinical and Translational Sciences Awards (ad hoc member), the NIH/NHLBI EPR-4 Working Group (member) and the Global Initiative for Asthma. He is an Associate Editor for The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Krishnan received his medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary/critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He received his doctoral degree in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Nana-Sinkam is Chair of the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He holds the Linda Grandis Blatt Chair in Lung Cancer Research. A member of both the Cancer Cell Signaling and Cancer Prevention and Control research programs at the Massey Cancer Center, Dr. Nana-Sinkam’s research has focused on the molecular pathogenesis of lung cancer and identification of novel tumor biomarkers for early lung cancer detection and surveillance. He has been well funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute for Drug Abuse.

Dr. Nana-Sinkam is a member of the National Cancer Institute Early Detection Research Network, and helped author the ACCP Lung Cancer Guidelines III (Molecular Biology of Lung Cancer). Dr. Nana-Sinkam has served as a member on a number of National Institutes of Health study sections and is an editorial board member for several scientific journals, including The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, The Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Frontiers in Thoracic Oncology and Lung Cancer Frontiers.


Dr. Nana-Sinkam previously served as the lead for mentorship in the center for faculty advancement, mentorship and engagement (FAME) at the Ohio State University. He currently serves as the co-principal investigator of the KL2 award in the Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research at VCU. He has published over 80 original scientific reports, six invited editorials/reviews and 11 book chapters.

Dr. Nana-Sinkam graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine internship and residency training at the University of Michigan Health System followed by a fellowship in pulmonary/critical care medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Dixon is the Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. She is ABIM Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.

Since 2001, Dr. Dixon has been an attending physician in the pulmonary and critical care division at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She has served on numerous committees for this organization, including serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Vermont Medical Group. In addition, she also leads an active research program in obesity and lung disease at the University of Vermont.

She has served on numerous national committees and review boards for the American Thoracic Society, the American Lung Association-Airways Clinical Research Centers, the National Institutes of Health and the Veteran’s Administration.

She received a degree in natural sciences from the University of Cambridge and her medical degree from Oxford University. Dr. Dixon completed residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and fellowship training at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dr. Bakhru is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Bakhru spends her clinical time in the ICU and running an ICU Recovery Clinic. She is the Associate Program Director for the Critical Care Fellowship at MUSC and Director of the Specialty Medical ICU.

Dr. Patil was previously the Clinical Director of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Medicine Program and the Director of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program in Baltimore. He has been active in national and regional leadership with roles with the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He was previously served on the ABIM Sleep Medicine Test-Writing Committee. He is the former President of the Maryland Sleep Society. He has authored more than 30 publications. Dr. Patil has longstanding research interest in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea and clinical trials in sleep apnea therapeutics.

Dr. Rivera is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. She specializes in lung cancer screening, diagnosis, staging and management of treatment complications, and currently serves as Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program and Director of the Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) Program at UNC.

She is the Chair of the Thoracic Oncology Network of the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and immediate past chair of the Thoracic Oncology Assembly of the American Thoracic Society (ATS). She has led ATS research workshops on the impact of co-morbidities on LCS, disparities in LCS and immunotherapy-induced lung disease. She serves as Vice Chair of the Lung Cancer in Women Task Force and of the Biomarker Task Force of the National Lung Cancer Round Table (NLCRT), charged to promote awareness of lung cancer as a women's health imperative and barriers to biomarker testing.

Her research interests include lung cancer in women and lung cancer screening. Dr. Rivera is an active participant in the CHEST Lung Cancer Guidelines Initiative and has had an integral part in the guideline's development. She is currently an investigator in National Institutes of Health-funded grants to examine the delivery, quality and outcomes of lung cancer screening in North Carolina, and co-principal investigator of a study to explore rural/urban disparities associated with biomarker testing. Throughout her career, she has worked effectively in multidisciplinary clinical and research settings, using her expertise in lung cancer to promote evidence-based screening, diagnosis, staging and treatment.

Dr. Svetlecic is an attending physician in the St. Luke's Health System where she sees patients in the hospital, in the clinic and virtually via tele-medicine. She was elected by her peers to three terms as Chair of the Department of Medicine at St. Luke's North Hospital and served as its Director of Respiratory Medicine. For the St. Luke's Health System, Dr. Svetlecic was the Director of Medical Staff Development and Chair of the Professional Standards and Credentialing Committee. She is ABIM Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Svetlecic has previously served as a member of the ABIM Pulmonary Disease Item-Writing Task Force. She also serves as an outside expert peer reviewer on complex cases through Chartis (formerly The Greeley Company). Dr. Svetlecic formerly held an appointment at the University of Missouri, Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and served as a guest faculty member in the Cardiopulmonary Section at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.


Dr. Svetlecic received her undergraduate degree in biology and her medical degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She completed a residency in internal medicine and fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

Headshot of Dr. Corey Ventetuolo

Dr. Ventetuolo is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Health Services, Policy and Practice at Brown University and Director of Academic Affairs for the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Division at Brown. She is the Associate Director of the Rhode Island Hospital Pulmonary Hypertension Center and Medical Director of the Adult Extracorporeal Life Support Program.

Her work focuses on sexual dimorphism in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and right ventricular function, hormonal modulation as a treatment strategy and novel methods of endotyping patients with pulmonary vascular disease. She is also interested in improving quality of care for patients with pulmonary hypertension and those on extracorporeal life support. Dr. Ventetuolo is supported by the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Ventetuolo completed her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, her residency at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and her fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
