Rheumatology Approval Committees
The Approval Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They comprise entirely practicing, board certified physicians with active certificates in their respective specialties.
Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment
Dr. Bolster is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). With a strong interest in training and education, Dr. Bolster has devoted her career to the training of rheumatology fellows, internal medicine residents and medical students. She values the importance of mentorship in her own professional development as well as through her commitment to sharing her dedication to patient care and education in the rheumatic diseases with learners at all stages of training. She has helped to train over 50 rheumatology fellows.
She has been the recipient of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Distinguished Program Director Award (2019) and the Mass General Brigham Program Director of the Year (2020). Among other medical education endeavors at MGH, Dr. Bolster is a member of the Women in Medicine Trainees Council, an initiative to support professional development for women trainees and young faculty members through mentorship. She is a member of several MGH education committees and has teaching roles at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Bolster has held leadership roles in ACR curriculum design and assessment, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones and the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has served as Chair of the ACR Committee on Training and Workforce and had a leadership role in the graduate medical education component of the ACR Adult Rheumatology Workforce Study. Dr. Bolster is ABIM Board Certified in Rheumatology.
Dr. Bolster obtained her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and her medical degree from Duke University. She trained in internal medicine at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk and obtained rheumatology training at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Dr. Govindaraju is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Rheumatology at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and is actively involved in teaching medical students. Additionally, she is Division Chair of Medical Specialties and a member of the Board of Governors at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. She is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology.
Dr. Govindaraju has been a member of the ABIM Rheumatology LKA Item-Writing Task Force since January of 2022 and was selected to be part of the Rheumatology LKA Standard-Setting panel. She has been listed as one of Castle Connolly's Top Doctors in Rheumatology in New Hampshire.
Dr. Govindaraju completed her residency training in internal medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts, and rheumatology fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Dr. Lohr is a Professor of Medicine, Chief and Medical Director of the Rheumatology Division and Rheumatology Training Program Director at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine (UKCOM). Her academic career has centered on undergraduate and graduate medical education, including at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine. At UTHSC, she served as Course Director for two medical school courses and Co-Director of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Clerkship.
Dr. Lohr is a past recipient of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Rheumatology Research Foundation Clinical Scholar Educator Award. As an active member of ACR, she has served on various committees since 1992, mainly in the area of fellowship training. Currently, she is a member of the ACR Division Directors Special Committee. Dr. Lohr has served on both the ABIM Rheumatology Exam-Writing Committee and the Rheumatology Board. She joined the Rheumatology LKA Approval Committee in 2023.
Dr. Lohr received her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and completed her residency in internal medicine at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, followed by a three-year research fellowship in rheumatology at Duke University Medical Center. She is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

Dr. Roberts is ABIM Board Certified in Rheumatology, with over two decades of experience in military medicine, academic teaching and community care. Currently serving as Chief of Rheumatology at Tripler Army Medical Center, Dr. Roberts has demonstrated exceptional dedication to patient care, medical education and professional development throughout his career. His expertise has been acknowledged with multiple teaching awards, including the 2018 Dr. Jeffrey P. Kavolius Award and the 2020 Dr. Michael K. Yancy Award for Outstanding Staff Teacher at Tripler Army Medical Center.
Dr. Roberts's diverse experience includes deployment to Iraq and time served in Kuwait, as well as providing care in the Marshall Islands, giving him a unique global perspective on rheumatology practice. He is actively involved in resident education, mentoring medical students from the Uniformed Services University, and teaching in various settings including the military, Veterans Affairs medical centers and Hawaii's community care facilities.
As an educator, Dr. Roberts has contributed to medical education textbook chapters, led medical abstract presentations with residents and contributed to assessments on the ABIM Rheumatology Item-Writing Task Force. He has delivered Grand Rounds at the University of Hawaii Internal Medicine Program.
After graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Roberts completed his internship and residency training at Tripler Army Medical Center. He then completed his fellowship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he was recognized as the Outstanding Graduating Fellow.

Dr. Schwab is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Arthritis & Rheumatic Diseases, at Oregon Health & Science University. She is also the Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Program and a staff rheumatologist at the VA Portland Health Care System. Previously, Dr. Schwab served as the Rheumatology Section Chief at the Portland VA for seven years. She was a member of the American College of Rheumatology Workforce and Training Subcommittee on In-Training Exam.
Dr. Schwab completed medical school and her internal medicine residency training at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston where she also served as chief resident. She completed her fellowship training in rheumatology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

Traditional, 10-Year MOC Exam
Dr. O'Rourke, who is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, is in private practice in Portland, Maine, and Division Director of Rheumatology at Maine Medical Center. Until 2017, he was a Professor of Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine (WFSM) and the Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program from 1995 to 2017.
Prior to his appointment at WFSM in 1992, Dr. O'Rourke was a lecturer in the Rheumatology Division at the University of Michigan. Prior to that position, he practiced general internal medicine in the United States Air Force (USAF) and was the Program Director of the Transitional Year Residency at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base, California, while concurrently serving on the volunteer clinical faculty as Assistant Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis.
Dr. O'Rourke is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has served on multiple ACR education committees including the Committee on Training and Workforce and its Subcommittee on Education that created the Rheumatology Entrustable Physician Activities and Rheumatology Curricular Milestones, and updated the ACR Core Curriculum for Rheumatology Fellowship Programs. He was a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones 2.0 Working Group that created the Rheumatology Milestones and Supplemental Guide. He also served as Chair of the ABIM Rheumatology Board Exam Committee. He is a founding member of the Carolinas Fellows Collaborative, whose work has included the creation of a competency-based curriculum of goals, objectives and linked evaluations for rheumatology fellowship training programs.
Dr. O'Rourke obtained a bachelor's degree in bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He trained in internal medicine at the David Grant USAF Medical Center and completed rheumatology training at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

Dr. Desmarais is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). She is the Rheumatology Division Interim Division Chief, as well as the OHSU Rheumatology Fellowship Associate Program Director. In 2018, she initiated and became co-director of the multidisciplinary interstitial lung diseases clinic, a clinic where rheumatologists and pulmonologists work side by side to provide the most complex patients excellent collaborative care. She has a passion for teaching, starting the OHSU School of Medicine rheumatology medical student clerkship, of which she was director for seven years. She continues to work with medical students as their rheumatology course director during the Skin, Bone and Muscle block. She also works with the medical students, residents and fellows at OHSU in the rheumatology clinics and during inpatient consultation weeks.
Dr. Desmarais previously served on the ABIM Rheumatology Item-Writing Task Force as an Item-Writer and mentor. She is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
Dr. Desmarais graduated from Ohio State University College of Medicine, then completed internal medicine residency and a chief resident year at the University of Utah. She completed rheumatology fellowship at OHSU.

Dr. Grossman is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is also the Director of Lupus Clinical Research at UCLA and serves as the educational coordinator for rheumatology in the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. She is ABIM Board Certified in Rheumatology.
Dr. Grossman is also a member of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and has served on the ACR Guidelines subcommittee. Dr. Grossman has been involved in quality-of-care measurements in osteoporosis and systemic lupus erythematosus. She is a member of the Lupus Foundation of America's scientific advisory board and is also a board member of Lupus LA.
Dr. Grossman received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Williams College and her medical degree from the University of Rochester. She completed her internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship at the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences.

Dr. Michael Guma is the Director of Rheumatology for Optum. He is an award-winning rheumatologist as well as co-founder and Vice President of the Guma Family Foundation, which grants at least $10,000 annually to the Tomorrows Children’s Fund of Hackensack University Medical Center to benefit the families of children with brain tumors. Dr. Guma previously served as Director of Rheumatology and Director of Osteopathic Medical Education at Saint Michael’s Medical Center, and Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency there in affiliation with New York Medical College. He was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has also served on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.
Dr. Guma graduated from Wake Forest University, the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (now A.T. Still University), and has a master’s degree in medical education from the University of New England. He trained in internal medicine and rheumatology at Saint Michaels Medical Center. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

Dr. Haftel is Professor of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Health Learning Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School, where she has spent her entire academic career. She is Director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology and leads the Adolescent and Young Adult Rheumatology Program. She has been the Associate Chair and Director of Education in the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases at the University of Michigan since 2007, after serving as Assistant and then Associate Director of Pediatric Education for 11 years. Dr. Haftel served as Director of Communication Skills and Professionalism at the University of Michigan Medical School from 2003 to 2007. She is ABIM Board Certified in Rheumatology and holds certification from the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics and Pediatric Rheumatology.
Dr. Haftel is recognized nationally for her work in undergraduate and graduate medical education. She is a member of the Association for Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) Longitudinal Education Assessment Research Network (LEARN) Advisory Council and serves as its chair. Dr. Haftel is Council Member of the APPD's Leadership in Educational Academic Development (LEAD) program. She has been named as a “Best Doctor in America” as well as being among “America's Best Pediatricians.”
Dr. Haftel received a bachelor's degree in biology and music from Union College in Schenectady, New York, and a medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, where she also completed residency training in combined medicine-pediatrics and a chief residency before coming to the University of Michigan for fellowship training in adult and pediatric rheumatology. Dr. Haftel received a Master of Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2004.
