Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees

ABIM Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees are responsible for the broad definition of their disciplines across certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC). Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees have oversight of the Approval Committees and are responsible for making certification and MOC meaningful and relevant within their disciplines.

Role

The role of the Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees is to:

  • Define, refine and set standards in certification and MOC in each discipline
  • Perform oversight/review of performance assessments in each discipline
  • Monitor trends in the discipline for impact on training and assessment
  • Build partnerships with societies and other organizational stakeholders in support of ABIM's mission

The Specialty Boards represent the disciplines in which ABIM offers certification (including Internal Medicine); they are overseen by the ABIM Council. The Advisory Committees represent the two specialties for which ABIM administers the initial certification exam (Hospice and Palliative Medicine; Sleep Medicine) which are cosponsored by a number of Member Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS); they are overseen by their respective Cosponsoring Committees.

Composition

The Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They include both practicing physician members and public members representing interdisciplinary healthcare professionals, patients and caregivers.

The Advisory Committees comprise representatives from each ABMS cosponsoring board. ABIM holds two seats on each committee.

All physician members of the Specialty Boards and Approval Committees meet ABIM's requirements for MOC.
