The Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They include both practicing physician members and public members representing interdisciplinary healthcare professionals, patients and caregivers.

Dr. Tanoue is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. She is Professor of Medicine in the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. She directs the Yale Screening and Nodule Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, co¬directs the Yale Thoracic Oncology Program and is the principal investigator of the Yale Lung Cancer Biorepository. Her academic focus is in the field of thoracic oncology.

Dr. Tanoue is Chair of the American Thoracic Society Thoracic Oncology Assembly. She has served in leadership roles in the American College of Chest Physicians and the National Association for the Medical Direction of Respiratory Care. She serves on numerous committees at her home institutions, including as a member of the governing board of Yale Medicine, and as immediate past-president of the medical staff of Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Tanoue is currently President of the Board of Directors of the Yale Medical Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Tanoue received a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine. She completed internal medicine residency, chief residency and fellowship in pulmonary/critical care medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Tanoue received a master's degree in business administration from the Yale School of Management.

Headshot of Abdullah Alismail

Dr. Alismail is a registered respiratory therapist and an Associate Professor of Cardiopulmonary Sciences and Medicine at Loma Linda University (LLU). He is the Program Director of the entry-level Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care and Master of Science in Respiratory Care programs at LLU. Dr. Alismail holds neonate and pediatric and sleep disorders specialist certifications from the National Board in Respiratory Care.

Dr. Alismail serves in various leadership roles in the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC), the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the American College for Respiratory Therapy Education (ACRTE). Dr Alismail also serves as an editorial board member of several peer-reviewed journals and has published various peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Alismail has been named or inducted as a fellow of CHEST, AARC and ATS due to his scholarship, leadership and education in the fields of pulmonary and critical care medicine, respiratory care and chest medicine.

In the area of medical education, Dr. Alismail developed, assessed and evaluated several program certificates, undergraduate and graduate programs in the U.S. and internationally.

Dr. Alismail completed his bachelor's degree from LLU in respiratory care and completed his graduate work and doctorate in education at Claremont Graduate University.

Headshot of Kathryn Bilello

Dr. Bilello is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. She is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (USCF) and Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at UCSF-Fresno.

She has served as a member of the In-Service Exam Committee for the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors. She directs the Lung Cancer Screening Program at Fresno Community Regional Medical Center and has a busy clinical practice which includes all facets of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Dr. Bilello completed her bachelor's degree in biochemistry with highest honors at the University of California, Davis and received her medical degree at New York University. She completed internal medicine residency at the University of Maryland, Baltimore and William Beaumont Army Medical Center. She completed her pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowships at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Ms. Connor is a patient advocate and volunteer living with pulmonary arterial hypertension, as well as a breast cancer survivor and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA). Since her initial diagnosis in 2007, Ms. Connor has dedicated herself to helping and encouraging others with pulmonary hypertension to hope for a cure, and has engaged in numerous advocacy and fundraising activities to advance awareness and research. In 2013, she held the first “Philadelphia’s Hope for a Cure Gala” followed by two additional galas in 2015 and 2017, collectively raising more than $600,000 to benefit PHA. She currently serves as Chair of the PHA Board of Trustees Development Committee and as a member of both the Governance Committee and Strategic Planning Committee. Previously, Ms. Connor served as a Vice President of Sales and subsequently Global Sales Operations for SAP America, Inc.

In addition, Ms. Connor volunteers as Co-Leader for the University of Pennsylvania PHA Support Group, and annually in support of the PHA Philadelphia Walk. As an advocate, she has appeared before Congress, participates in PHA’s Advocacy Action Network and presented on pulmonary hypertension to pharmaceutical companies. She has spoken from the patient perspective at PHA international conferences and testified on a PHA panel before the Food and Drug Administration.

Ms. Connor was an early advocate of the PHA Registry, and secured a $25,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation President’s Grant Fund of the Princeton Area Community Foundation to analyze the impact and benefit of pulmonary hypertension patient support groups on patient outcomes. She also served as a patient member for the University of Pennsylvania’s Formal Review and Evaluation as they sought certification to become one of the first PHA Comprehensive Care Centers, and served on the PHA Research Portfolio Working Group.

Following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2018, Ms. Connor has volunteered with Unite for HER, working to establish national partnerships and funding to support underserved patients. Unite for HER recognized Ms. Connor’s service in 2023 with the annual Service Award.

Ms. Connor is a native of Philadelphia, where she completed her undergraduate study at LaSalle University.

Dr. Esteitie is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Central Michigan University (CMU) and a pulmonary and critical care attending physician at Covenant HealthCare, a community hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. Her clinical expertise lies in pulmonary vascular diseases and right heart failure, while her passion for medical education centers on leadership, curiosity and public speaking.

Recognized for her excellence in teaching and leadership, Dr. Esteitie has received multiple awards from CMU's Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine residencies. In 2023, she was honored with the Excellence as a Community Educator Award by CMU and was inducted into the Academy of Medical Educators in 2024.

Dr. Esteitie plays an active role in institutional leadership, serving on the Medical Executive and Credentialing Committee at Covenant HealthCare. She reinstated the Michigan Chapter of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, where she served as President from 2021 to 2023.

Nationally, she holds leadership positions in various organizations. At the American College of Chest Physicians, she contributes to the Education Sub-Development and Scientific Presentations & Awards Committees. She currently chairs the Section on Medical Education in Critical Care at the American Thoracic Society and is an engaged member of the ATS Education Committee, where she participates in multiple workgroups. 
Additionally, Dr. Esteitie serves as an editorial board member for The Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics and The Journal of Respiratory Medicine.

Dr. Esteitie completed internal medicine residency and served as chief resident at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and Boston Medical Center – Brighton. She completed fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Tufts University. She is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Quesada is a pulmonologist with extensive experience serving underserved communities. Since joining John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in 2008, Dr. Quesada has demonstrated exceptional leadership as director of outpatient clinical activities and the pulmonary rehabilitation program. Dr. Quesada has successfully expanded medication access for disadvantaged patients, championed modernization of clinical facilities and collaborated with local government on clean air policies benefiting under-resourced neighborhoods.

As an educator, she has created an inclusive training environment for medical fellows, emphasizing patient-centered and evidence-based approaches. Her comprehensive understanding of pulmonology is enhanced by her unique perspective on healthcare challenges in underserved communities. She is ABIM Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Quesada received a medical degree from the Universidad de Ciencias Médicas in Costa Rica before completing training at Michael Reese Hospital and Northwestern University.

Headshot of Peter Sporn

Dr. Sporn is a Professor of Medicine and Cell and Molecular Biology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is also Director of the Northwestern University Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program. Dr. Sporn’s clinical interests include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, eosinophilic respiratory diseases, interstitial lung diseases and sarcoidosis. His research interests include the role of eicosanoids in lung inflammation, eosinophil biology, mechanosignaling in lung injury and repair, innate immunity and lung host defense. He has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs throughout his research career.

Dr. Sporn received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He trained in internal medicine at Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Michigan. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Tatem is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and multispecialty Critical Care Medicine Fellowship programs at Henry Ford Hospital. She also serves as the Associate Division Head of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Tatem served as chair of the graduate medical education committee, of which she remains an active member. She also chaired the medical education advocacy team focused on raising awareness of medical education funding needs in the Michigan Legislature. Her academic interest is on process improvement as applied to medical education. She has guided each of her fellowship programs through curriculum innovations, most recently behavioral-based interviews for fellowship recruitment. She was a physician lead for the education and training team in the Sepsis Project, a transformational system redesign process to improve the effectiveness of sepsis care throughout the five hospitals within Henry Ford Health System (HFHS), and earned a Focus on People Award from the HFHS Board of Governors in recognition for her commitment to process improvement and patient safety throughout the health system.

Dr. Tatem is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and is actively involved in the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors, the Section of Medical Education of the American Thoracic Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the National Medical Association.
