Sleep Medicine Advisory Committee

The Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They include both practicing physician members and public members representing interdisciplinary healthcare professionals, patients and caregivers.

American Board of Internal Medicine

Dr. Stansbury is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the West Virginia University (WVU) Sleep Evaluation Center and the Program Director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship at WVU. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine.

He is an active member of the American Thoracic Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and has served in multiple leadership roles, including as committee chair for these societies. He is the President of the West Virginia Sleep Society and an active member of the West Virginia Rural Health Association.

His research has involved team science and collaboration across multiple institutions. His interest and investigations broadly focus on rural health inequity, novel approaches to the diagnosis and management of sleep apnea and the physiology of occupational lung disease. Dr. Stansbury has published multiple research and review articles in these domains and multiple book chapters focused on sleep medicine and occupational lung disease.

Dr. Stansbury earned his medical degree at the WVU School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at WVU and his sleep medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)

Dr. Agrawal is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. He currently serves as Chief of Internal Medicine and Director of Sleep Medicine at Huntington Hospital in New York, where he leads efforts to improve respiratory and sleep health within the hospital and surrounding community. 
He is the author of multiple peer-reviewed articles and has served for several years on the ABIM Sleep Medicine Item-Writing Task Force and the former Sleep Medicine Test-Writing Committee, contributing to the development of certification standards and assessment content for the field.

Dr. Agrawal is a member-at-large with the American College of Chest Physicians and currently serves as Associate Editor for Sleep and Breathing and Respiratory Medicine. His academic and professional interests include sleep-disordered breathing, interdisciplinary models of care and advancing evidence-based medicine in both clinical and educational settings.

Dr. Agrawal earned his medical degree from King George Medical University in India. He completed fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Georgetown University and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Sleep Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine.

American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)

Dr. Gonzalez is a neurologist with more than 25 years of experience in general neurology and sleep medicine. In 2025, he accepted a position to practice clinical neurology and sleep medicine in Hilo, Hawaii, assuming the role of the area’s sole neurologist following the retirement of the incumbent. He is ABPN Board Certified in Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine.

Starting in 1995, Dr. Gonzalez maintained a solo neurology practice in Alpena, Michigan, as the only neurologist in the region, seeing both adult and child patients. In 2009, he began incorporating sleep medicine into the practice after obtaining board certification. His work in a rural setting fostered independence, adaptability and a strong connection to community-based care.

Dr. Gonzalez earned his medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and completed an internship in internal medicine at the Philippine General Hospital. After relocating to the United States, he pursued a pediatric residency at the University of Buffalo’s Children's Hospital, followed by a residency in child neurology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Martin is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Martin's scientific research program has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs and other sources for over 20 years, and focuses on improving sleep as a key component of maintaining and improving physical and mental health. Her work has addressed sleep disorders in older adults, women and veterans, and includes studies of novel approaches to treating insomnia disorder, treatments for patients with comorbid sleep disorders and understanding how improved sleep leads to health benefits. Dr. Martin has a strong record of service and leadership including serving as the 2022–23 President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. She was recently recognized with the VA Health System Impact Award, recognizing the role her research has played in improving patient care.

Dr. Martin received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California, San Diego after completing her clinical internship at Brown University. She then completed post-doctoral training in geriatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)

Dr. McConville is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. She has been on faculty since 2019 and practices as a generalist with the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and as a sleep medicine specialist with the Department of Neurology. She is ABA Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Sleep Medicine.

With a particular interest in perioperative issues related to sleep medicine, she joined the Society for Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine and has been an active member since 2015. She has served as a Co-Chair for the Sleep Medicine Clinical Practice Subcommittee since 2016. Her work has included surveying North American anesthesia trainees about their interest in, and knowledge of, sleep medicine as a subspecialty. Additionally, she enjoys working with residents and fellows in the operating rooms as well as her clinic.

Dr. McConville attended medical school at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She spent an extra year completing the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship, working with a gastroenterologist on research related to eosinophilic esophagitis. She graduated from medical school in 2012 and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she completed her residency in anesthesiology in 2016. She served as a chief resident during her PGY-4 year. After finishing her residency, she completed a sleep medicine fellowship through the University of Utah in 2017.

Dr. Poma serves as Chief Legal and Compliance Officer for Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group, based in Newport News, Virginia, and teaches as an adjunct at William & Mary Law School. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of LifeSpire of Virginia, a nonprofit operating senior living communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Previously, Dr. Poma has served as Chief Human Resources Officer at William & Mary, General Counsel and President of N1 Health in Boston, Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management at Alpha Natural Resources and Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Administrative Officer for a Fortune 500 company based in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Poma led the conceptualization, development and operation of the West Virginia Family Wellness Center providing comprehensive primary health care to employees of mining companies in Central Appalachia, as well as their spouses and dependents.

Dr. Poma earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration from the College of William & Mary, and a Juris Doctor from Emory University.

American Board of Family Medicine

Dr. Sorscher practices family medicine at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and directs the Sleep Health Center at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He is ABFM Board Certified in Family Medicine and Sleep Medicine.

His research interest focuses on how sleep disorders, especially insomnia, affect overall health and wellbeing and how to incorporate treatment of sleep disorders into the primary care setting. He has published numerous research papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and has lectured frequently on sleep disorders and healthy sleep at natioal and regional conferences, and for the public.

He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed a residency in family medicine at St. Paul Ramsey Hospital in Minnesota and a fellowship in sleep medicine at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)

Dr. St. Louis is the Director of the Mayo Sleep Behavior and Neurophysiology Research Laboratory and Associate Professor and Consultant in Neurology and Sleep Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He is ABPN Board Certified in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, Sleep Medicine and Epilepsy.

He also serves as Research Chair for Mayo Clinic Southwest Wisconsin, La Crosse. His research interests include REM sleep behavior disorder and the interfaces between sleep, cognition and epilepsy.

Together with colleagues and mentees, he has authored over 130 peer-reviewed PubMed articles, three books on the topics of epilepsy and electroencephalography, and over 30 book chapters.

Dr. St. Louis earned his undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa. He went on to complete residencies in preliminary medicine, neurology and epilepsy/clinical neurophysiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and his master’s degree in clinical investigation from the University of Iowa College of Public Health in Iowa City.

American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)

Dr. Sterni is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Sleep Center in Baltimore. She is ABP Board Certified in Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Sterni’s practice has been focused on the management of children with sleep-disordered breathing. She has published multiple manuscripts in this field and has edited a book on chronic home ventilation in children, Caring for the Ventilator Dependent Child: A Clinical Guide (Humana Press/Springer Science, 2016). Dr. Sterni is regularly recognized as a “Top Doctor” in Baltimore Magazine.

Dr. Sterni earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric pulmonary medicine.
