Mission
ABIM is a physician-led, nonprofit, independent evaluation organization driven by physicians who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. Grounded in its mission, ABIM's accountability is to the profession of medicine and the public.
ABIM's Mission
To enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care.

As much as ABIM’s role is to certify physicians and be a voice of trust and credibility, ultimately, we are serving patients. I am unfettered in my belief that all of us are here to serve one consumer—one stakeholder—which is the patient.
About ABIM
Approximately one in every four practicing physicians†—more than 260,000 doctors††—is ABIM Board Certified, including primary care physicians, hospitalists and specialists practicing across 20 different fields of medicine.
ABIM Board Certified physicians set themselves apart by regularly demonstrating their expertise in their discipline by taking and passing rigorous knowledge assessments created by their peers.
History
Since its founding in 1936, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has set the standard for internal medicine and its subspecialties. ABIM Board Certification demonstrates that internists possess the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes necessary for excellent patient care. ABIM is the largest of the 24 Member Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which works to establish common standards for physician certification to protect the public. ABMS is an independent, nonprofit organization.
The Stern Legacy
The certificate you’ve earned is very similar in design to the one presented to Neuton Stern, MD, in 1937. Dr. Stern was one of the first physicians to be certified by ABIM, which was founded in 1936. Dr. Stern’s story is one of hope, adventure and, ultimately, a life dedicated to medicine. In many ways, his story symbolizes all that ABIM and the certificate you are now holding represents.
Of the Profession, For the Public
ABIM Board Certified physicians set themselves apart in their commitment to continuing education and regular demonstration of their expertise.
