The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) was founded in 1936 in answer to a public call to establish more uniform standards for physicians. Since then, board certification has meant that internists have demonstrated—to their peers and to the public — that they have the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care. More than 270,000 internists maintain ABIM Board Certification, or one in every four physicians in the U.S.

ABIM is not a membership society, but a physician-led, nonprofit, independent evaluation organization. ABIM's accountability is both to the profession of medicine and to the public.
